Chapter 463: Why Did It Have to Be a Human?
Chapter 463: Why Did It Have to Be a Human?
The night was deep, and the Mount Tu residence lay in complete stillness then cold light flashed. A long sword tore through the darkness, aimed straight at Tushan Jingci's back."Young Miss, watch out!"
Yueshi turned without time to think, flicked her wrist, and the long whip at her waist shot out like a serpent from its den. The tip of the whip wrapped precisely around the blade.
Using the force of the sword against itself, she twisted and pulled. The long sword veered off by inches, scraped past Yueshi's shoulder, and with a sharp sound, drove itself into a corridor pillar, the blade humming with vibration.
Yueshi shielded Tushan Jingci behind her and swept the courtyard with her gaze. "Who is there!"
A dark figure stepped slowly into the open.
Wrapped in a black robe, face obscured by black cloth, a short horn jutted from his forehead and glimmered with a faint, eerie light under the moon. The demon energy around him was so dense it had nearly taken on a physical form.
"Do you know what crime it is to trespass in the Mount Tu residence?" Yueshi tightened her grip on the whip handle and pressed her voice very low.
The man in black gave no answer.
In the next instant, his silhouette vanished from where he stood.
Yueshi's pupils contracted sharply. She swept the whip in a wide arc. Through the sound of the whip cutting air, the man in black moved with extreme speed, drawing his sword, spinning, then thrusting forward, three movements executed as one fluid motion, the blade once again aimed at Tushan Jingci.
Yueshi did not retreat but pressed forward instead. The whip curved through the air and coiled around the man's sword arm, then she yanked hard, lifting him entirely off the ground and slamming him down onto the stone path of the courtyard.
"BOOM!"
Shards of stone flew outward. The man in black's back struck the ground, carving a shallow groove in the earth but he seemed to feel no pain at all. He pushed off the ground with one hand, his body snapping upright, the stone slabs beneath his feet shattering from the force, and he lunged forward again.
Sword light and whip shadow wove through each other across the courtyard.
Yueshi's whip was sometimes soft and sometimes rigid. When soft, it slid along the blade to redirect it. When rigid, it struck the sword with enough force to knock the tip aside.
The two exchanged blow after blow, the ringing of weapon against weapon as dense as rainfall, extraordinarily piercing in the stillness of the night.
"This cannot go on."
Yueshi felt herself growing increasingly taxed. She drove the man back with one lash of the whip, then reached into her sleeve with her left hand and pulled out a jade bead, tossing it up into the air.
The jade bead rose to a height of three zhang, but instead of exploding as she had intended, it hung suspended in midair, giving off a faint and flickering glow, as though it had collided with some invisible barrier. The light was pushed back on itself and died.
"A formation!"
Yueshi's heart sank.
They had come prepared. The courtyard had been sealed off from the outside. The sounds of the fight could not escape, and she had no way of sending a distress signal.
The man in black took advantage of her momentary distraction. His sword tip was already at her eyes.
Yueshi twisted to the side and avoided it. The blade grazed her cheek and swept past, carrying several strands of her hair with it.
She used the motion to spin her body, and the whip made a full circle around her, propelled by the rotation, lashing out with tremendous force.
The whip struck the man in black squarely across the chest. The black robe split open, revealing the gray-blue skin beneath.
The man staggered back two steps, looked down at the bleeding wound on his chest, then slowly raised his head. His eyes were still as calm and still as a pool of stagnant water.
He raised his sword again.
Yueshi gripped her whip and, shielding Tushan Jingci behind her, stepped back half a pace.
"Young Miss, the formation he has laid can only seal off sound and suppress signal artifacts. It cannot stop people from passing through. You need to run, now. I will hold him here. The Lady will be back very soon!"
Yueshi said to Tushan Jingci.
Tushan Jingci hesitated for a moment, her expression filled with conflict.
She could not bear to leave Elder Sister Yueshi behind, afraid something terrible would happen to her but she also understood that staying would only be a hindrance.
"Elder Sister Yueshi, you must be all right!"
Tushan Jingci took one last look at Elder Sister Yueshi, then turned and ran out of the courtyard with Xiao Mo.
Seeing this, the man in black made a decisive choice and revealed his true form.
His true form resembled a rhinoceros, yet also a water buffalo, with the head of a pig, the feet of an elephant, three hooves, and a great round belly.
"Quechenxi: a creature of the sea, yet one that repels dust. Placed in the home, no dust or grime can enter. Also like the hide of the dust-repelling beast."
The man brought one leg down toward Yueshi with tremendous force.
Yueshi had no time to avoid it fully, and could only raise both arms before her and take the blow directly.
Yueshi felt as though an entire mountain had crashed down onto her body, and she was sent flying backward but she pushed herself up quickly, revealed her own true form, and three cat tails swayed in the night air.
Yueshi was no longer an ordinary cat demon. Her bloodline already showed signs of ancestral reversion, in the direction of Huan.
"Huan: its form is like a wildcat. One eye and three tails. Its voice contains within it a hundred sounds. It can ward off evil, and wearing its hide cures jaundice."
"MROWR!"
Yueshi lunged at the rhinoceros demon, moving with extraordinary agility, leaving a trail of claw marks across his body.
"ROARR!"
The man, feeling a deep, oppressive irritation, found an opening and sent Yueshi crashing backward.
At the same time, he tilted his head upward and spat a torrent of water at Tushan Jingci, sending it crashing toward her with tremendous force.
Tushan Jingci froze in place, her mind going completely blank but Xiao Mo had already started running toward Tushan Jingci the moment the man began gathering the water, and he launched himself forward in a full-body tackle.
"BOOM!"
"SPLASH!"
The sound of the lake water erupting and the sound of Xiao Mo hitting the water with Tushan Jingci in his arms merged together simultaneously.
A towering column of water surged up from the entire surface of the lake.
Before the lake surface had even settled, the man had already gathered another torrent of water, ready to finish them off but at that moment, a snow-white fox tail descended from the air.
One.
Two.
Three.
Before the man could even register what was happening, eight snow-white fox tails had already coiled around his neck.
For a Nine-Tailed Celestial Fox, one tail per realm.
Tushan Xinhua, at the Immortal realm, stepped down from the air, walked before the man, and looked at him with cold, killing intent filling her eyes. "Who sent you here? That you would not even spare a five-year-old child!"
"Ha ha ha!" The man let out a cold laugh. "For my master! What does a mere Nine-Tailed Celestial Fox whelp matter?"
With those words, the man closed his eyes.
"This is bad!"
Tushan Xinhua immediately released the man and simultaneously produced a painting scroll, drawing him inside it.
"BOOM!"
With a tremendous explosion, the man self-destructed his demon core, and together with the scroll, was reduced to ash. Not even his soul remained.
The courtyard returned to stillness, leaving nothing behind but devastation.
"Hmph!"
Tushan Xinhua let out a cold snort, then quickly turned and pulled her daughter and the little human boy from the surface of the lake.
Tushan Xinhua laid her daughter down on the grass.
The little human boy, even in unconsciousness, held her daughter tightly and would not let go and because Tushan Jingci had been touched by a male, the cinnabar mole at the center of her brow began to gradually fade, as though it had been washed away by the lake water.
"This servant begs for death..."
Yueshi reverted to her human form and knelt before Tushan Xinhua, her expression consumed by self-reproach.
She had never imagined something like this could happen.
She had nearly failed to protect the Young Miss just now, and on top of that, the Young Miss had been touched by a boy, the day before her sixth birthday.
"What use would your death be?"
Tushan Xinhua let out a quiet sigh and looked at the two small children clasped together in each other's arms, her eyes filled with complicated emotion.
"It was only one day away..."
Tushan Xinhua crouched down and gently brushed her daughter's wet cheek.
"Is this... the will of heaven after all?"
"No matter what was done, it could not be avoided?"
"But why..."
Tushan Xinhua bit gently at her lower lip.
"Why did it have to be a human?"
